Beyond the Blog with Books and Things

Welcome to Beyond the Blog, where we’ll not only be featuring some amazing blogs but also the creative people behind them. Today we have an interview with Melissa from Books and Things.  I love that her reviews are honest and helpful and her ever changing pin up girl headers are great.  Let’s get to Melissa’s interview so you can see for yourself why we’re fans (two words, man harem!).

Let’s start with a few blog related questions

Why did you start blogging?
I read a lot of books and felt like I needed to do something other than just reading. Fine… it gave me an excuse to read so much. ;D It also sort of gave me a reason to want more books. ;)

How has your blog changed since you first started it?
I have become less worried about doing it “right” and more about having fun with the review.

What are 3 words that describe your blog?
Odd, fun (I hope), snarky

What is your favorite thing about blogging?
The community! However, it also gets me in trouble when I end up wanting even more books! :D

Who are some of your favorite authors that you discovered because of blogging?
Jennifer Estep was the first author to do a blog post on my blog. I also discovered her by blogging. I won a book of hers and was hooked. Kersten Hamilton, Dianne Duvall, Kristen Painter, Kelly Gay are all so sweet to talk to. I just love meeting people as creative as they are! And to be honest… I could go on for days on the authors I’ve discovered through blogging or because of blogging. I’ve even rediscovered a few!

Let’s get to know the bloggers behind the blog, shall we?

What do you do for a living?
I breathe in and out, try to eat right (don’t always succeed). Hm… I’m sure that is what you were going for, right? ;D

What would your dream job be?
Artist, fun maker… something creative!

Are you a morning person or is coffee a must before you’re able to function?
I was a morning person when I was a kid. I’m now a full on owl (but I can’t convince my dogs of it)! I don’t need coffee to function in the morning (caffeine doesn’t keep me awake, I know, I’m strange…) but I will have a cup to stave off headaches. True story.

It’s noon on Sunday, what are you up to?
Sleeping! Yea right. Dogs won’t let me. *grumble* Hm… I guess that means I’m grumbling about not having sleep. Sounds about right.

What is your favorite gadget?
My laptop, hands down. My fave programs are dropbox (which is free), Calibre and 1Password. All are available for the PC and Mac (no, I’m not affiliated with any of them… lol)

If you could sit down and chat with any author, who would you pick and what would you like to talk about?
Hm… hard question. I’ve had a couple of twitter convos with Jeaniene Frost and she is a hoot. We also have migraines in common. Perhaps we could talk about going to a magician to see if he or she could make Bones a reality for me? Or even KMM. Do the same about Barrons. Hm… yes… I like that idea…

What are 3 books/series you think are must reads for fans of paranormal related genres?
It depends. PNR lovers can be so different than UF fans. Then there are the crossovers. Also fantasy. To me I love them all, so I guess it would be an individual thing for me to recommend it. Not a cop out, but I know people who love PNR, but hate UF and vice versa.

However… I do tend to like the dark PNR/UF combos the best. Those would be like the Elemental Assassin series, Black Dagger Brotherhood, Charlie Madigan series, KMM Fever series, Night Huntress series, Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld series, holy cow could I go on. And that is just the adult series I enjoy… Oh and yes, I’m aware it’s way more than 3 but I just can’t stop once I keep going. *sigh*

You just won your dream vacation, all expenses paid. Where are you going?
Everywhere! A trip around the world! Stops in London, Dublin, Italy, Aus, NZ, Galapagos Islands, oh just about anywhere really. :)

Oh, we forgot to mention you get to take your fantasy man with you. So, who are you taking?
OMG! Wait! ONE man?! Can’t I take the man harem? *gives sad face* You DID say fantasy! ;)

Thank you Melissa for taking some time out for us (and introducing us to your man harem). If you want to know even more about Melissa, here’s where you can find her around the web.

Beyond the Blog – All About {n}

Welcome to Beyond the Blog, where we’ll not only be featuring some amazing blogs but also the creative people behind them. Today we have an interview with Nelaine from All About {n}. We are so happy to have her with us today. We love her weekly features Bookcase of the Week and So many books, So little time. Not to mention the appearance of her blog is one of our favorites. Lets jump straight into the interview so you can see for yourself why we are fans.

All About {n}

Let’s start with a few blog related questions

Why did you start blogging?
I’ve been blogging for years now. Well over the three years that my current blog has been running. Before blogger I used to have a blog on Xanga. There I chronicled my daily experiences and both my pregnancies. I used it as an outlet for the my rants and rates, my fears, worries, dreams, etc. and maybe a book review somewhere in there.

How has your blog changed since you first started it?
When I actually started All About {n} it was also in a journalistic fashion. Thus the name All About {n} – because it was all about me. Eventually it evolved into a book blog that’s why the name really isn’t a bookish one.

When it comes to writing reviews, do you spend hours stressing over it or do you simply write it and move on?
I actually write reviews pretty quickly. I don’t stress. I try to make them short, sweet and simple. Was it good, what I liked about it and what I didn’t. I’ll re-read a couple of times make some minor changes and move on.

There has been a lot of talk lately about posting negative reviews. What is your opinion about it?
There has been? I didn’t even know this. I believe in positive reviews. If I like it… swell. If I don’t… well that’s just my opinion. I never say not to read a book based on my opinion. I give my fair and honest opinion and if someone doesn’t like it well… tough cookies.

What is a favorite post that you’ve done?
I definitely don’t have a favorite post. But I do love my Bookcase of the Week posts. Why? Because I’m nosey and love to see how people store their books.

What is one thing that you think new bloggers should be careful not to do?
Don’t stress the little things. Enjoy yourselves reading, writing reviews and not about publicity, publishers, authors, etc.

Let’s get to know the bloggers behind the blog, shall we?

Instead of just asking for your name, do you have a nickname people call you by?
Actually Nely is my nickname. My full name is Nelaine (pronounced Knee-Lane) I’ve hated it my whole life. No one ever pronounces it right thus I’m more commonly known as Nely.

Where are you from?
I live in sunny Miami. Lived in Florida my whole life although my parents are Cuban.

What do you do for a living?
I work in law firm as a paralegal. Luckily work has been slow and I sit in front of my computer blogging, twitter-ing, facebook-ing or on GoodReads.

What is a typical day in your life like?
I wake up at the crack of dawn and begin wrangling the kids to preschool. Brushing teeth, getting dressed, watching some Curious George, etc. After they’re dropped off and my daily stop at the local Starbucks, I’m off to work for the standard 9 to 5. Then it’s time to pick up kids, start homework, get some type of dinner on the table. Which is usual cooked for us since I don’t cook. Then it’s showers, story before bedtime and finally “me” time. This usually starts anywhere from 9 to 11pm. The hubs and I will cuddle, watch a movie or finally me snuggling up to a book till the wee hours of the morning. Oh yes, that’s when I read at night. And then, I start the whole thing again at the crack of dawn.

It’s noon on a Sunday, what are you up to?
Cleaning. Sundays are the days I clean. I run around doing groceries all while washing clothes, cleaning floors, washing dishes, and the like.

What is something that people might be surprised to know about you?
Actually I’m a pretty open book. I’ve talked about anything and everything on my book or Twitter.

What is your favorite thing to do (aside from reading) in your down time?
Spending time with my family. The hubster and I are very dedicated to doing fun things with the kids on the weekend. So we’re always off to one thing or another. The park, the zoo, the beach, a concert… whatever keeps them entertained works for us.

Do you hide the fact that you read romance books?
Sometimes I do. (vows head in shame). I read a little bit of everything. I truly do, but the books I do the less reviews on are romances. Don’t know why because I enjoy them just as much as everything else.

You’re stranded on an island (not really sure how that happened) and when you look in your bag you’re thankful to see your 5 favorite books are in there. What’s in your bag?
Crap. That’s a tough one. I honestly can say I don’t have any favorite books. I enjoy many of the books I read but I rarely (if ever) read anything more than once.

You just won your dream vacation, all expenses paid. Where are you going?
Italy. I’ve always wanted to go but ever since the kids came along we decide we won’t go until they are older and we can all enjoy it as a family. I would hate to leave them behind for a 2 week vacation.

Oh we forgot to mention you get to take your fantasy man with you. So, who are you taking?
The hubster. Haha. Yes, I know that may be corny.. but believe it or not, he is a stud muffin, he loves me to pieces and is great in bed… hahaha

We want to thank Nelaine for stopping by our. She’s great and if you want to know more about her, here is where you can find her.
