Erotic Inspiration
I’m thrilled to be at Paranormal Haven on today’s stop on the Release Me blog tour. Just a few more days until the book hits the shelves!
Release Me is an erotic romance and, yeah, it’s steamy. Someone recently asked me where the inspiration for writing erotic romance comes from, and while it’s a great question, it’s one that has a very basic answer: The same place that the inspiration comes from for all my books. So what is that inspiration? Well, I think it’s different for every author, but for me, a story starts with either the characters or with a story idea. For my demon-hunting soccer mom series, for example, I was initially searching for a paranormal idea at the same time that I wanted to get into the chick lit market. But as a new mom, I wanted to lean toward mommy lit. While brainstorming the two ideas, they mashed together and Kate Connor, demon-hunting soccer mom was created.
The demon-hunting series is pretty high concept, though. So where does the idea for a more character driven story like Release Me come from? The answer is in the question: from the characters.
The inspiration started with a conversation with my editor. I wanted to write an erotic story that centered on two damaged people, especially the heroine who rebelled against her beauty queen background in a dangerous and damaging way. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the characters that drive the story, but because their sexual relationship is such a huge part of the way their relationship grows, the eroticism both bolsters the plot and the character growth.
So the bottom line? Erotic romance stems from the same place as other novels—from the characters and from the situation. And if that situation is a bit steamy … well, that’s just all the more fun!

My favorite characters? There have been so many but whenn I think about it the first character that comes to mind is always Gregori from Christine Feehan's 'dark' series. His personality is big, intimidating and imposing but we got to see his softer side when he was with his mate.

Vanyel from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar stories and Acheron from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters top my list with Anne McCaffrey's Menolly and Afra coming close seconds.

If we're going "old school", I'd say that my MOST favorite literary character is Scarlett O'Hara. Every time I read Gone with the Wind, I'm amazed all over again by her character.
In my more recent reads, I really enjoy Mac from Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. I love to read about women that can "rise to any occasion"!
Such a hard question to answer! My favorites change with each series I read. I love Kresley Cole's IAD characters... Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson is amazing... I love Karen Marie Moning's characters... I could go on and on!
I think my most favorite literary character is Acheron from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter Series. The man is an Atlantean God who has the power to destroy the world and has existed since the beginning of time. He has been used, abused, persecuted, betrayed, rejected, and murdered..but throughout it all he has survived with amazing humility and compassion. He has great wisdom and knows the future. And through all this he still holds onto humanity and is like you or me.
My all time favorite character is also Acheron from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. Just the way he is described in there makes me just want to eat him up lol. My second all time favorite character is Maverick Brac from Lynn Hagen's Brac Pack series. I guess I have something for tall dark and GORGEOUS!!!! Even if Maverick is gay I can still dream right lol.
I'm with Ilona- McCaffrey and Lackey are two of my favorite writers for characters that have stuck with me through time. And Robb's Dallas/Roarke story lines. I love ongoing story lines, they really bring those favorite characters to life. But there are so many different ones that it's really hard not to have them all stick in someway if I have enjoyed the books.
Thanks for the great post and congrats to Julie on the new release! I have so many, but in the top 5 are Eve and Roarke from JD Robb's In death series.
I love all of Sherrilyn Kenyon's characters! Thanks for the chance to win!!
Theres really so many, it all depends on what genre Im reading.
My fav character is Curran from the Kate Daniels Series.
Thanks so much for having me on the blog! Michelle H, I'm reading Gone With the Wind right now (well, re-reading). LOVE Scarlett!
Hmm, this is a really hard question to answer...I love characters with pluck. While I could go on and on listing the couples that I love (beginning and ending with Darcy & Elizabeth) I think the dynamics between the characters is what draws me. And Nikki and Damien have those dynamics! :) She's feisty and he's strong and brooding. You can just see the sparks fly! Love it!
Thanks Brandee! So glad you enjoyed Nikki and Damien! And you're right; it really all gets down to that energy/connection/dynamic b/w the characters.
I've been a reader from the first Golden Book I received as a child. I started collecting books when I was 7. Asking me for my favorite character is like asking who my favorite child is. Of course in the case of my kids, on any given day it would be none of them. LOL
I guess my all time favorite would be a character of Robert Heinlein's, the infamous Lazarus Long AKA Capt. Sheffield.
Hard to pick a favorite character. Some of my faves include Larissa Ione's characters, also the Doms of Cherise Sinclair's and Kallypso Masters' books.
