Dressing Up for Halloween

With one of my favorite holidays on the way - Halloween – I always think about costumes. A fun costume can make or break your Halloween, and a truly good costume can showcase a personality. You wouldn’t find someone prissy and dour dressed as a pumpkin, after all, and you won’t find someone bubbly and fun dressed as the Grim Reaper.

That being said, it’s hard to think of costumes for characters! Let’s say I wanted to write a Halloween party into my paranormal series, Midnight Liaisons. What would my characters wear to celebrate the holiday? I had give this some thought, and here’s what I came up with.

Sara Ward – the heroine of DESPERATELY SEEKING SHAPESHIFTER. Sara has a sorta-secret werewolf side. She’s a bit timid at times and not entirely sure she wants to be in touch with her animal nature. She’d definitely be Little Red Riding Hood for Halloween. It’s cute, a little sweet, and at war with the ‘big bad wolf’.

Ramsey Bjorn – Sara’s hero. He’s surly, silent, and tends to growl a lot. He would also completely refuse to dress up for a Halloween party. That’s just his nature. However, if Sara was able to persuade him to dress up for a costume party, he’d probably go as Wolverine from the X-Men.

Bathsheba Ward and Beau Russell – these two were the hero and heroine of the prior book, BEAUTY DATES THE BEAST. They’re happily engaged at this time, and so they’d definitely go in a matching ‘pair’ of costumes, since Bathsheba would likely be picking out the gear. She’s a bit bossy that way. Still, Beau would probably put his foot down on anything too silly, so I’m thinking they’d be Mulder and Scully from the X-Files. A serious looking costume, with just a whiff of the paranormal.

Marie – One of the human women that works at Midnight Liaisons. Marie’s a glasses wearing bundle of human sarcasm. She’d be Velma from the Scooby Doo gang, if Velma frowned at everyone and was a stick in the mud.

Ryder – The other woman working at Midnight Liaisons, and Marie’s polar opposite. Chirpy, sweet, and so perky she’s almost saccharine, Ryder would be something effervescent and adorably pink. I’m thinking Glinda the Good Witch or Princess Aurora.

And now I’m going to be a total tease and talk about a few of the characters in DESPERATELY SEEKING SHAPESHIFTER and what they’d dress up as. You haven’t met them yet, but maybe this’ll whet your appetite!

Gracie Anderson – cousin to Connor and in the same wolf-pack that he’s in. She’d be Daisy Duke, and she wouldn’t even have to dress up much for Halloween…though she might have to find some shoes, since Gracie is a big fan of going around barefoot.

Savannah Russell – the kidnapped female were-cougar of the Russell clan. She’d be Shakespeare’s Juliet.
