Interview and giveaway with Thea Harrison

As always, we are thrilled to have author Thea Harrison back back on our blog.  Today she's talking with us about her latest novella, Hunter's Season.

Make sure you keep reading after the interview to learn how you can enter to win a ebook of your choice from Thea's Samhain backlist

First off, congratulations on winning the 2012 RITA for Paranormal Romance! What was going through your mind when you found out?
Thank you! I was dumbfounded when they called my name, and kind of went into shock. The paranormal category in the RITAs is a tough one, because there are so many outstanding writers. That night, the finalists were Nalini Singh, J. R. Ward, Amanda Stevens, Caridad Pineiro, Ellen Conner, Dani Harper and myself. As you might be able to tell from that list, I was truly honored just to be nominated.

What can readers expect in your new novella, Hunter's Season?
In Hunter’s Season, the reader gets to travel back into the Dark Fae land of Adriyel. The story follows a secondary character from Devil’s Gate, a woman named Xanthe who works for the Dark Fae crown. More specifically Xanthe works for Tiago, who is the Dark Fae Queen Niniane’s chief of security.

The hero is a secondary character from Storm’s Heart, Aubrey Riordan. When there is an assassination attempt against Aubrey, and he is severely wounded, Niniane orders Xanthe to guard him in a remote location while Tiago hunts down those responsible for the attack. I found Xanthe and Aubrey immensely satisfying to write, and I hope the reader enjoys their story as much as I did.

What 3 words would you use to describe Xanthe? How about Aubrey?
Xanthe is quiet, sensitive and lethal. Aubrey is powerful, noble and flawed.

We love, LOVE the males in your novellas and books. How is Aubrey different from the heroes we've already met?
Aubrey is a mature hero (in human terms he would be in his forties or so), and as such he’s had a rich and varied past. He deals with a lingering bitterness from his previous marriage to a woman who ended up betraying everything that he believed in. He’s a strong-minded, nuanced statesman who quietly held true to his ideals while working under the scrutiny of a dangerous despot, the former Dark Fae King Urien, and I really enjoyed giving him the HEA that he deserves.

Will we see any familiar faces in Hunter's Season?
Yes! This story gave me the chance to dip back into Dark Fae matters, and the readers gets to catch up with Niniane (Tricks) and Tiago from Storm’s Heart. I was really excited to pull them back into a story.

What’s with the Tarot deck? Will we see it continue its way through the novellas or will it work its way into the books?
The Tarot deck is explained in Hunter’s Season, and the fact of its existence is further explored in Lord’s Fall, although the deck itself does not appear in Lord’s Fall. At this point in time, I have no further plans to write more novellas with this story arc.

Do you plan on writing any novellas about the mated pairs that already had their own book?
I’ve had a terrific time writing the four Elder Races novellas, and enjoyed developing the mysterious Tarot deck through those stories, but at this point in time I have no plans to write more novellas in the series. I won’t say absolutely no, never again, but there won’t be any more novellas forthcoming in the near future as I plan on sticking solely to the full-length novels.

Thanks so much for having me on your blog! It was a pleasure to visit with you again.

Hi everybody! Thanks for your kind comments.

This is my second attempt to leave a comment here on the blog - I'm in learning mode with a new Mac, so I'm going to give it another try.

One of the reasons why I like asking questions like the one I did for this post is that I enjoy hearing when readers might love a story I also love, and I also get a chance to jot down new-to-me books. :)

Good luck with the contest!
Thea
