When a mysterious hand brings a suitcase into Hessius Mann’s office everyone seems after it. Inside is a strange blue liquid that no one seems to know what it does, or where it came from. Theories on what it might range from a weapon, drugs, or a magical cure for the undead like Mann. A mess of different people come after the case and turn Mann’s life upside down. At first he just wanted to give the case to the police, but when people start coming after him, he decides to find out why people are after the case, and what is contains.

Dead Mann Running is the second novel in the Hessius Mann series. In this very dark and grim world a drug was made that causes the dead to become undead, only they are not the flesh eating zombies out of horror movies. In Mann’s life he was a cop that was tried and found guilty of murdering his wife. He was executed for his crimes. When evidence was discovered that he was innocent, he was brought back from the dead. He is now undead (Chakz). He works on the bad side of town with his liveblood assistant Misty.

After events from the first novel livebloods have put in safety measures in case the Chakz go feral. They might not be brain eating zombies, but they can become flesh eating monsters. It is believed they do become feral when they give up on life. If they do not pass a test they are shipped off to camps, in case they go feral. Mann has passed his tests with Misty’s help, but the events in this novel lead him to the camps and even ChemBet’s facilities, where the drug that brings the dead back to a un-life was created. Mann is joined by unlikely allies who help, and make things worse for him.

This series is dark, and often times gruesome. Nothing in the series so far is simple. Though the plot sounds cut and dry, it is anything but. The pages are filled with exciting getaways and dark humor. It is a series best started with the first book, and not for the faint of heart. The Chakz are walking corpses that are gross, and often times out of their minds. There is a slim romantic interest for Mann, though it is not in any way center stage in the story.

I have really enjoyed the novels so far. They are perfect for not-so-scary Halloween books, and great detective/adventure romps. Dead Mann Running easily topped the first novel, Dead Mann Walking. For those who like a different kind of undead, this is a great series.

Thanks for a great review! I'm ashamed to say that I have book 1 but it got buried under my TBR mountain range. Gotta go get my hard hat on and dig it out :)

This series sounds interesting, but I'll have to read some "fluff" between them after your review.

I'm all for complex plots. Flesh eating zombies...not totally sure I can handle it, but I'd like to check it out.
