After years spent putting everything she had into her work at the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid, Andrea is devastated when she's fired after it's revealed she's a shifter. Trying to get her life back on track, she joins her friend Kate Daniels at her new investigative firm, Cutting Edge. Taking a case that involves the murder of four shifters, Andrea is forced to work alongside the man she walked away from. Raphael doesn't make things easy on Andrea and emotions are brought to a head but past hurt feelings will need to be forgiven if they are to survive the ancient gods and deadly venomous creatures lurking in the shadows of Atlanta.
Andrea has been a solid supporting character throughout the Katie Daniels series. Here, she effortlessly takes the lead and opens herself up in a way she never has before. Andrea shows her vulnerable side as she talks about her childhood among violent and abusive werehyenas and how that affected her adult life. I was a little put off by the way she handled things with Raphael after the loss of her job but I understand now how losing something so important to her tore her up inside. Andrea has a tough outer shell and I like that about her but the emotions she puts out there adds depth to her character that makes her so much more than a woman with killer fighting skills. It was a pleasure to get to see that side of her.
The spoiled, arrogant son of Bouda Clan's alpha, Raphael hasn't changed there but he shows there's more to him in this book. After an encounter involving him and Andrea that was a very poor judgment call on his part, something changes in him and he begins to pursue her like a true alpha. With unshakable determination and an inability to grasp the meaning of the words no and go away. He claims Andrea as his and this is followed by a few funny scenes, a very brief yet steamy encounter and meaningful communication that takes things between them beyond what it's ever been before. It took a little while but Raphael steps up to the plate and the bumpy road he and Andrea traveled down to be together was one of the highlights of this book.
In Gunmetal Magic, four of Raphael's workers are killed when they uncover a vault while on a dig and Andrea is investigating what happened. Her search leads her to dangerous magic, people with snake like features and a god that's better off staying dead. Action and suspense is plentiful and the supporting cast that joins in along the way is the icing on the cake. Kate and Curran make welcomed appearances but my favorite was the volhv Roman. Something like a Russian Druid, Roman worships an evil Slavic god so you think he's someone you want to stay away from. Instead I found him to be charming, in his own way, funny and I loved when he and Raphael butted heads. He's someone I hope to see again in future books.
With a story and romance that's perfectly written and a heroine that gives the series' title character a run for her money, Gunmetal Magic captivated and entertained me from page one If you're an urban fantasy lover, this series is a must read.
