Interview and giveaway from author Nalini Singh
Make sure you keep reading after the interview to learn how you can enter to win a copy of Tangle of Need or if you're new to the series, Slave to Sensation.
What sets your Psy/Changeling series apart from other shifter books in the paranormal romance genre?
The Psy with their phenomenal mental powers, such as telepathy and telekinesis, paired with their susceptibility to madness and their decision to condition emotion out of themselves, are the most obviously unique element of the series.
Also, the series features true shapeshifters – those who can shift into their other shape, whether it be a leopard or a wolf or a falcon, at will. They aren’t constrained by the moon for example, nor do they consider themselves torn in two. They are both and they love both parts of their nature.
Can you tell us about your latest release, Tangle of Need?
Tangle of Need features wolf changelings Riaz and Adria. Both are dominant wolves, but Riaz is a lieutenant, while Adria is a senior soldier.
Riaz has already found his mate – only to discover that she’s married and in love with another man. And Adria has just walked away from a toxic relationship. Neither one of them is looking for a relationship when their lives collide – but the heart plays by its own rules.
What 3 words would you use to describe Riaz? How about Adria?
Actually, I think I’d use the same three words for both of them: Strong, loyal, hurt.
What was the biggest challenge you faced while writing this book?
This book tore my heart out – Riaz and Adria’s story was emotionally intense, and I had to stay true to that intensity throughout, even when it might’ve been easier to lighten things up.
Will you be continuing the main story arc indefinitely, or do you envision wrapping it up at some point and starting a new one?
I knew the end point of the original arc when I wrote the first book, and I think that focus has helped keep the series strong. So yes, the arc will end when it’s time.
Will there be more books about the Forgotten?
It’s possible. They’re an important part of the world.
We live in the Bay Area and love that the majority of your books take place here. Why did you choose this area/NorCal in which to set the Psy/Changeling world?
It was a combination of chance, passion and logic!
I’d traveled through California, particularly the Bay area, the year before I began to write the first book in the Psy/Changeling series. When I began, I knew I needed a location that had cities and lakes, rivers and mountains, and, importantly, was part of a larger land mass – my changelings have big territories and need lots of room to roam.
California was the first place that came into my mind, and it was perfect. Perfect! And since I’d been there, walked the streets, I felt I could write it authentically.
Since then, I’ve been back a number of times, explored it in even more depth.
Kind of an odd question but how fast do the cars go? It takes a lot less time for them to get to Yosemite than it does us.
That’s a deliberate decision on my part. I figure (hope!) road/car safety will increase exponentially in the next three quarters of a century, so the majority of cars should be able to go at least twice the current maximum speed, with the high-speed models going even faster.
These cars are all equipped with computronic collision avoidance systems, and many of the main roads have automatic navigation, so human error is taken out of the equation. As you can see, I’ve spent some time thinking about this!
Do you think your Psy/Changeling and Guild Hunter books can be enjoyed by the same readers?
Yes, absolutely. Some readers prefer one over the other, as they are two very different series, but the majority of my readers enjoy both. I always suggest people try the first book from both series.
