Kat Redding is a vampire who hunts vampires and werewolves. Those she kills call her Lady Death. When a member from the werewolf cult asks for help in destroying a vampire house, Kat agrees. The only other option is that the vampire house takes over the cult, and grows stronger.

This is a very dark story. Vampires and werewolves came out years ago, and took over the night. They are not sexy vampires who go around seducing women. They only seduce and kill in horrendous ways. The story takes place in a major city that has a Gotham (Batman reference) feel. The story is told thought Kat’s eyes, and because she is a vampire we only get the night scene.

I wasn’t sold on Kat at first. She is hardcore, but she worries over much about her humanity. Even though those she kills are usually murderers themselves, she carries around a lot of guilt. There is without a doubt huge dose of self-loathing. This is what put me out at first, until I discovered more about her past. She really reminds me of Batman with fangs.

Silver hurts vampires and werewolves alike, it has become an illegal metal. Luckily Kat has help, a young man she helped save when she was turned into a vampire. He finds her the silver she needs to fight what goes pump in the night. He is also a genius at making weapons. The weapons are what give Kat an edge over those she kills. It is her fight scenes that make the novel come alive. The action is fast paced, and gripping. The detail adds the right about of ick factor, and made this reader really see the scene.

There isn’t a lot of side plotting, nor any side romances going on. Mostly because Kat is more ready to tear someone’s face off, unless Jonathan teaches Kat to play nice. Jonathan, the werewolf cultist knows who she is, and even knows a nice piece of her past. Years ago she changed his life. Other than Kat, he is the most interesting side character. He grows on Kat, much like he did me.

This is a true action-adventure story. Endings are the hardest part in novels for me, some do it right, and others go over the top, or not enough. This one is just right. It doesn’t leave the reader with a cliff-hanger, but I am looking forward for the next novel. I have my differences with Kat’s self-loathing, but I am hoping she grows over time. I was sold into the world, and loved the action.

Nice to see a book where the vamps are still evil. There's so books like that out, I've been calling those that deviant from the angst, romantic, misunderstood vamp "Vampire Noir."

I think that it is fantastic that the Vamps are evil in this book. Sometimes it is nice to remember that at one time they were the "horrors" not the defenders.

Vampire Noir! I am going to have to start using that.

Hi Beth, great review, not sure about it yet though. The book is not calling my name.
