Today we have the pleasure of having author Kristin Miller with us to answer a few of our questions about writing and her most recent release, Intervamption. For more about the book you can also check out Athenna's review.
Kristin Miller: Thank you so much, Athenna and Stephanie, for having me on your blog today!
Paranormal Haven: For those who have not had the pleasure of reading Intervamption, can you give a little glimpse into the book?
Kristin Miller: Sure! Slade, a fallen assassin, has been given a second chance. Called back into action for an unknown task, Slade must shift into what he hates most: a vampire. When he awakens, an instant attraction ignites between him and his sexy vamp teacher, Dylan, who’s been assigned to show him the ropes. Dylan’s orderly life blew up recently when a rogue vampire killed himself right before her eyes. On top of that, her pride and joy, ReVamp—or the Rehabilitation Facility and Management Program for Vampires—is in major trouble. She's been accused of providing infected blood to the locals, weakening them and making them easier prey for their enemies, the shape-shifting therians. Forced to question long-held allegiances, Dylan and Slade have no choice but to trust in each other as mayhem reigns around them.
PH: Can you describe Slade and Dylan?
KM: Slade is strong and possessive and snarky as hell and doesn’t give a shit who knows it…until he meets Dylan. She’s dedicated to ReVamp and determining what’s tainting the blood supply, even if that means her love life has to take a back seat. Beneath that work ethic though, she’s feisty and no nonsense. A petite little spur in Slade’s side.
PH: Will we see more of them in the next book?
KM: Yes! Slade and Dylan are major players through the entire series. Although the main love interest in Vamped Up is Ruan (Dylan’s assistant) and Eve (a mundane with dangerously tantalizing blood), Dylan and Slade are very involved in bringing down Savage and his reign of terror.
PH: Was there anything in particular that inspired Intervamption?
KM: I was in the middle of writing my romantic suspense novel when The History Channel blared from the living room, “Behold! I send you out as sheep amidst the wolves.” My fingers stilled. A shapeshifter shifting into a vampire? Had that been done before? I didn’t think so. I decided then and there to write the hell out of it.
PH: Can you explain the title of the book? How does it tie into the book?
KM: From the beginning, we know something isn’t right in the vampire world. Their acceptable drinking sources are tainted. Dylan is dead set on discovering the problem and filtering it out of the blood. But every step forward she’s forced to take two steps back. There are many times she has to intervene to prevent a hungry vamp from bloodlusting. Not to mention, Dylan is roped into a nasty arranged marriage that makes Slade go ape shit from day one of his transition. If he doesn’t intervene and stop the ceremony, he’ll lose his one true love. Let’s just say both the hero and heroine have to stage a lot of Intervamption’s before they earn their happily ever after!
PH: Will all the books in this series be told from the vampire’s point of view or will we see some books from the therian side of the war?
KM: Intervamption is written from both vampire and therian points of view, but the therian view is seriously skewed. Not all therians are evil, though the reader only peers through the eyes of villainous shifters. Vamped Up, the second book in the series, is written from the eyes of Ruan, a vampire, and Eve, a mundane who is fully aware of the paranormal underworld of Crimson Bay.
PH: Where do you see your Vampires of Crimson Bay series going next?
KM: Oh, this is a great continuation from the previous question. I’m currently writing the third book in the Crimson Bay series about a hero introduced in Vamped Up who is not therian or vampire. I figured if there were vampires and shapeshifters in Crimson Bay, why couldn’t there be other creatures going bump in the night? I don’t want to give too much away, so let’s just say this is not a series where the villain gets what’s coming to him at the end of every book. Sometimes the conflict simply makes the evil churning inside him boil over.
PH: How many books do you plan on writing in this series?
KM: I’ve plotted three books which will entangle three heroes and three heroines in a fight for their lives and the right of their species to survive. All threads will be tied by the end of the third book…at least that’s the plan at the moment.
PH: If you could be on a date with one of men in this series, who would you pick and what would the date be like? (It can be someone we have not been introduced to yet in Intervamption)
KM: That’s tough, because I’m really lovin’ the hero in Vampires of Crimson Bay #3, but that could be because I’m engrossed in his head at the moment. Looking back, I think Slade is my overall favorite. He’s unabashedly Alpha, mouthy and dominant, in all the “fan yourself” ways. There’s nothing like a strong, dominant man who can take control during the day, then melt with a single touch from his woman at night. Wait, I think that just summed up my date…
PH: Who is your fictional book boyfriend and why?
KM: I don’t know that I’ve ever thought about it! Hmm…I think I’d have to say Rhage from J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. He’s sexy as hell for all the reasons I gave for loving my hero in the last question. I remember reading Lover Eternal and counting the stomach clenches until I’d turned the last page. I hit twelve—it’s pretty damn amazing if a fictional hero can make you react like that. I dream of the day when my heroes spark the same reaction from my readers.
