Recently we've had the pleasure of featuring author Jennifer Turner's Darkness Within novels on our blog. It's a really great dark paranormal romance series and for fans of the genre, it's one you'll want to check out. For more you can check out Stephanie's review of Eternal Seduction and Eternal Hearts. Here is a excert from Eternal Hearts, the latest release in the series.
Toni jerked awake to the sound of the hotel phone screaming at her just as the last sliver of light faded from the sky. She sat up and cast a quick glance over the suite then frowned. A rather nice fixture of the room was missing…but the lights were on now, so maybe he hadn’t gone far.
She rubbed her eyes when the phone screeched again. Who would be calling her so early in the night? She rolled over to the nightstand and picked up the receiver. “Yeah?”
“Good Morning, Miss Tutoro,” a cheery, English voice greeted her from the other end.
She couldn’t help but smile. “Hi, Robert. How are you?”
“I’m fine Miss, and yourself?
She wrinkled her nose. “I’m good, but you can call me Toni, Robert. Miss Tutoro makes me feel all old and stiff.”
“Very well, Toni. I shall do my best to remember that.”
“So, what’s up?”
“I’m actually phoning to inform you that your meeting with Lord Locke has been postponed until tomorrow evening. Unfortunately, some business has come up which requires his immediate and undivided attention.”
She frowned. “Is everything okay?”
“I’m sorry Miss…Toni. I’m not at liberty to discuss city affairs with you at this time. I do hope you understand.”
“I understand,” she said as she twisted her index finger into the spirals of the phone cord. “I guess I’ll just show up at his office tomorrow night then. Should I be there at Midnight?”
“That would be perfect. In the interim, Christian says that if you’d like to venture outside the confines of your suite, you may do so, but only if you are accompanied by Drake. Since a final decision hasn’t been made with regard to the duration of your stay, he wishes there to be no trouble. Do you find his terms acceptable?”
A slow smile tugged at her mouth. “Yeah, that works for me.”
“Excellent. Do you require anything else for your room?”
She looked around again. “Unless you can tell me where Drake went, I’m all good up here.”
Robert’s warm laughter filled her ear. “Check the bathroom, my dear. He has more use for it than most.”
She eyed the closed bathroom door. More use for it than most? What did he mean by that? “Uh…okay. Was that all you needed to tell me?”
“Yes, Miss. I won’t keep you any longer.”
“Well, if you need me, you know where I am. Have a nice night, Rob.”
“Thank you, Toni. You have a good night, too.”
Toni sighed as she set the phone back on its base. Robert was smiling when he told her to have a good night; she could sense it through the phone, which felt wonderful since she couldn’t remember the last time she woke up and heard a happy voice.
Maybe coming home had been a good idea after all.
She sat up and threw her arms into the air, intending to stretch out her tight muscles, but paused when the bathroom door swung open and her missing fixture sauntered out.
Drake didn’t have a stitch of clothing on, save a small white towel wrapped around his waist. And if that wasn’t enough to get her undead heart pumping again, his hair and his spectacular body were still dripping wet.
He wasn’t defined…he was chiseled from the finest bronzed stone she’d ever seen. Lightly dappled with dark hair, his sculpted chest tapered into a set of rock hard abs that she could probably do her laundry on for the rest of her immortal life. And just below his belly button, sandwiched between the deep cuts of his hips, was a thin trail of hair that tauntingly disappeared under his towel, practically begging for her to come and see where it went.
She slowly lowered her arms and folded her hands in her lap. Jagged scars crisscrossed every single inch of his rough skin, but they didn’t detract one bit from the incredible man standing across the room. If anything, for her, each pale line added something new to explore, something new to learn about the man she now had at least one more night with.
A man who made her feel alive again…
The horny teenager trapped deep inside her somewhere wanted nothing more than to rocket off the bed and lick every last bead of water off his hard sexy body. But the woman she’d become over the last few years, the one who saw the world in a way the teenager never would, wanted nothing less than to kiss each scar and take away the sadness and pain still hidden in his eyes.
“Welcome back to the world sleepy head.”
Toni tore her gaze away from Drake’s body and met his smiling eyes. “Good morning. I almost thought you left.”
“I figured I’d hit the shower while you were sleeping. I didn’t want my stink to scare you away.” He ended his sentence with that lopsided smile she’d become rather fond of.
She mirrored the gesture. “Well, thanks for thinking of me.”
The grin on his lips widened for just a fraction of a second before it turned devious at the corners. “You’re welcome,” he drawled as he hooked his thumbs inside the top of his towel and inched it down a little farther, baring more tanned skin for her hungry eyes.
The teenager and the woman inside her both sat up and took notice, waiting to see how far that thin trail of hair went as the towel slid even lower down his hips. But just before they got the answer they’d been hoping for, he ripped the damn thing from his waist and clothes suddenly appeared on his body.
Toni shook her head then stared at him again, this time in disbelief. All that gorgeous skin was now covered by a tight black t-shirt, hard leather pants and a pair of boots. How the hell did he do that? But more importantly…why? She blew out the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. Well, if nothing else, at least he looked comfortable.
“What?” his gruff voice scolded. “You were expecting to see Drake Junior?” He clucked his tongue at her. “You haven’t even bought me dinner yet.” Then, much like a little kid, he stuck his nose up in the air and stomped back into the bathroom.
Dinner! She hadn’t bought him dinner? Was he serious?
She rolled up onto her knees and glared at the bathroom door. “I don’t recall you buying me dinner last night before you made me take my shirt off and shoved your tongue in my mouth!” She clamped her hands over her mouth as heat suffused her cheeks.
OH GOD! The words fell out before she even had a chance to stop them. She closed her eyes when the laughter in the bathroom started light but slowly grew until it echoed through the suite.
“That wasn’t dinner,” he called. “That was just the appetizer. And from what I could tell, you were more than ready for the next course!”
Toni threw herself back against the bed then pulled the comforter up over her head. She had to spend the entire night with a man who she’d just thoroughly embarrassed herself in front of, and now it wasn’t because she wanted to. And yes, flaming cheeks and all, she would willingly admit that she wanted to spend more time with him. But now…now it was because Christian said so.
She punched at the comforter. She hated playing Christian-Says. Not only because the mere thought caused her blood to rebel for some strange reason, but because no matter what she did, she never seemed to win.

Wow, I almost never read excerpts as it is just teasing myself. And I just did that. I want to read the whole book now!
So please enter me in the give away. auriansbooks at gmail dot com.
And my question for Jennifer:
How many more books will there be in this series? And if you could be something paranormal, what would you be and why? I myself have always wanted to be a real witch (a good one ofcourse).
Do you have a favorite character so far in the series?
Loved the first book - looking forward to the second.
Thanks for sharing the excerpt - definitely did its job at making me want to read it.
I'm going to ask a non-book related question: as one of the prizes in some Godiva truffles, what is your favorite truffle flavor?
rickimc[at]aol[dot]com
After reading the excerpt, I'll definitely have to check these books out! Thanks for the great giveaway!
goodbooksgoodcoffeegoodlife@gmail.com
@Aurian - Thanks for your comment! There will be at least 13 more books in the series, for a grand total of 15. There probably won't be less, but there might be a few more here of there if readers fall for a character I didn't plan a book for. I'm all about making my readers happy! :)
@Alcott - Thanks so much for stopping by, and for giving ES a chance! :) My favorite characters change all the time, depending on whose book I'm working on. So right now my favorite character is Oktober, the hero of Eternal Embrace (book 3). He absolutely refuses to be anyone other than himself, and he might just be the most unapologetic character I've ever written. But I love him! :)
Ricki - It's a pleasure to meet you! My favorite of the truffle flavors is mint chocolate chip. :) The oranges and cream is pretty good too though!
@Nicole - Thanks for stopping in! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the excerpt. :) Good luck!
And a big thanks to the fabulous ladies of Paranormal Haven for including me in this event! :) You're awesome!
Wow! 15 books in the series. I had no idea! I can't wait to read more about Oktober. He is intriguing in a nasty way. And, he makes me think of Vin Diesel.
I'd love to win, of course, thanks for the contest!

Thank you for the giveaway!
I read the Eternal Hearts excerpt and it was really fun. I can't wait to read on for the "next course" ;-P. The covers for Eternal Seduction and Eternal Hearts are very sexy and mysterious. I would pick up these books just by looking at these covers.
angeldream3[AT]gmail[DOT]com
Wow what a tease! I started it and was like I'll read a bit more, a bit more and then it was over! I will most definitely be starting this series. Thanks for the chance to win them.
thegirlonfire27 at gmail dot com
Wow that was a great post. I loved the sound of the characters and the dialog was intriguing. I will have to check these reads out. Thank you for coming on and sharing your works with us.

I loved the excerpt. And I love series. 15 books is amazing.I look forward to reading these books. Thanks for stopping by.

I loved reading that, it really makes me want to read the book. Who would by your dream cast if it was made into a movie?
twoofakind12@yahoo.com
I read the excerpt and then went to your website to learn more about your books. They sound fantastic and I'm looking forward to reading them.
Barbed1951 at aol dot com
Question 1: Why am I just now hearing about this series? It sounds amazing.
Question 2: Who, if anyone, were your influences in the paranormal genre?
dukediva32@yahoo.com
@Steph - Thanks for dropping in! I can't explain enough how much I adore Oktober. And he reminds me of Vin too. My husband always likes to say that Oktober is like Riddick (from the Chronicles of Riddick) without the moral hang-ups! ;)
@Amy - It's nice to meet you! And thanks so much for the compliments. :) I'm working with an artist right now to finish the cover design for book 3. Hopefully I'll get to share it soon!
@TheGirlOnFire - Thanks for joining us! This excerpt is from Chapter 7, but you can read the first three chapters of both Eternal Seduction and Eternal Hearts on my website. :)
@Teril - It's a pleasure to meet you! Thanks for commenting! Good luck! :)
@Carol - Thanks for stopping in! And here I was worried 15 was too many. :)
@debbie - Thanks for joining us! :) Wow...I don't even know who I'd cast if the book was made into a movie. All I know is the guys would have to be big in stature! ;)
@Barbara - Thanks for stopping by, and for checking out my website. :) Good luck in winning the giveaway!
@Blue Shedevil - It's nice to meet you! In answer to question 1, you probably haven't heard of the series because I'm self-published. :) I do have an agent and we're working on selling the series to a major publisher - but I don't have any traditional "street cred" yet. ;) As for question two, I'd have to go with Sherrilyn Kenyon. She's the author who made me want to write!
Wow, that was a great exceprt. I will definitely have to pick up a copy of this book. Looks so good.
iqb99@yahoo.com
Thanks so much for this mucho giveaway!
You are a new author to me but the excerpt you shared was fabulous! It really whet my appetite for the book!
Thanks again!
lindalou(at)cfl(dot)rr(dot)com
Hi Jennifer,
My name is Jasmin and I love your books. The one question that I have been wanting to ask for a while is; Will the next books come closer to each other? There was a long wait between Eternal Seduction and Eternal Hearts. How long will we wait for the next installment?
jasmin.aldaco.hay@gmai.com
@Danielle - Thanks for stopping in. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the excerpt! :) Good luck in the drawing!
@lindalou - It's nice to meet you! Thanks so much for the compliment on the excerpt. :)
@Jasmin - Thanks for joining us! Awww...it's awesome to hear you love the books. :) It's comments like yours that keep me writing! As for your question about the time between releases - Eternal Embrace (book 3) will be released sometime around Halloween this year. :) Once I'm finished with my final revision, which I'm working on right now, my agent will do his editing thing and then I'll be able to release it! If I can manage to get everything finished, I might even try to release the book earlier - but the Halloween date is one I know I can make without issues. And I'd rather release a book a little early than late. :)
This series sounds really good. Do you have them all planned out in advance or do you kind of plan to write where it takes you?
juliecookies(at)gmail.com
I would love to read your series. Both books sounds really great. It would be great if you came out with additional books to the series. What other paranormal creatures do you like to write about? Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com
I haven't read this series yet, but from what I've read I have been missing out. Gotta' find out more about Drake :)
lenikaye@yahoo.com
Whoa- was not expecting the 15 books answer!
I noticed you said you were working with an artist for your next cover. How much input do you get in the creation of the covers of your books?
b(dot)cardone(at)hotmail(dot)com
This sounds like it will be a great series. I know I am a person that loves long series, you get to feeling like you actually know the characters. I love to get updates on previous characters, to have them play small roles in following books and learn little bits of how their lives are after their story ends. Will your characters make cameos in subsequent books?
manning_j2004 at yahoo dot com
Sounds like an amazing story from what little bit I read on here. Need more! lol. And wow that cover art is smokin hott! Who did the photos?
Count me in for this one!
k28dalton (at) yahoo (dot) com
I cannot wait to get my hands on this book. I love the cover, it is very eye catching.
I guess I have two questions for you. Number one being, do you ever judge a book by it's cover? I am guilty of this since the books artwork is what initially draws me to a book.
My second question being, how long does it normally take to come up with the covers of your book and where do you get the ideas from?

I posted the giveaway on my Twitter
@Julie S - It's nice to meet you! I know where the series as a whole needs to go, but each book pretty much takes shape while I write it. I just start with the main character and let them take over! :)
@Tore - Thanks for commenting! I love writing about vampires, but I also write about were-creatures, Paladins (protectors of humanity), Harbingers (Paladins gone bad), ghosts...and a few others I don't have names for yet. ;)
@Leni - Thanks for joining us! Drake's a good guy...with some bad boy sprinkles. ;)
@Bethany C. - It's a pleasure to meet you! As it stands right now, I get total input on my covers because I'm self-published. :) I designed the cover for Eternal Hearts with my agent's stamp of approval though. However, from here on out all the covers will have custom art with the actual characters on the cover! You can see the first character portrait I worked on with the artist here: http://www.darknesswithinnovels.com/art/
@June M. - Thanks for stopping in! The characters in the series will definitely make cameo appearances in other books. I'm the same way when it comes to reading series - I love it when previous characters pop up throughout the story line. :)
@Katie - It's nice to meet you! The cover for ES is just a stock photo that reminded me of the heroine of the book. And the cover for EH is actually two stock photos combined. :)
I have a button on my side bar of Holy Cannoli Recipes
@Kristin - Thanks for the cover compliments. :) I have to admit I do often judge a book by its cover, but I've also been known to pick up a book just because I think the cover is bad...so I'm kind of weird when it comes to that. :) As for how long it takes to come up with the ideas, it just depends on the book. My choices were limited for the covers of ES & EH, mainly because I didn't have a huge budget...so I went more for theme than anything. With the new covers that will start with book 3 - I'm actually choosing a scene from the book as the cover. :)
What is your writing mantra in 15 words or less?
Thanks.
lesly7ch(at)yahoo(dot)com
Why did you decided to write this series with such flawed heroines? (It's a nice change from the girl next door or kick ass agent type).
acm05atjuno.com
Wow...that was a really good excerpt! I really enjoyed the conversational style between Toni and Drake. I'm definitely adding this series to my wishlist. From the excerpt it appears that Toni is a vampire but I'm curious as to what Drake is?

This is great fun and these books look wonderful. I thank you for the opportunity to win the give away. My question would be, when you are writing and come to a place that is difficult and will just not flow for you what is you favorite thing to do to relax and get your mind out of the cycle of "but I have to get this done?" Thank you for sharing with us today.

Hello Jennifer! I am so excited that you have a new book coming out. I have read Eternal Seduction and loved it. I can't wait to read Eternal Hearts!
Nice teaser! I'm new to your work Jen, but loved the excerpt. I'll be adding your eternal books to my wish list. The giveaway is awesome please count me in.

@Llehn - Thanks for stopping by. My writing mantra would probably be - "Only write when you feel like it." I don't set daily word counts or force myself to write every day because I don't respond well to threats. ;) I have to write when to mood strikes, otherwise I get mad. :)
@Anne - It's nice to meet you! I prefer flawed characters because, to me, they're more real. I have strong characters with tortured pasts, weak characters who find their strength as their story progresses, young characters who start their books selfish and slightly annoying ;)...and then ancient characters who just aren't human anymore. I guess I just want to tell the stories of the characters who are often overlooked. :)
@Maria - Thanks for entering the giveaway! You're right, Toni is a vampire. As for Drake, well...he's a vampire too...along with a little something else. ;)
@marybell - It's a pleasure to meet you! Thanks for reading the excerpt and good luck on winning the giveaway! :)
@Denise Z - Thanks for stopping in! When I run into a difficult scene that won't flow for me...I usually change my music. I can't write without music playing, so if a scene isn't working I'll change the music or find a song that really fits with the style of scene I'm writing and go from there. Most of the time, I don't fall into the "but I have to get this done" cycle - because I don't force myself to write. I only sit down at my laptop when I'm really feeling my "muse". :)
@Robin K - Thanks for commenting! Good luck with the contest! :)
@Na - It's nice to meet you! I love the dark paranormal romance genre. And for me, the darker the better! :)
@nat - Thanks for stopping by! LOL! My hubby likes the cover of ES too. Although I have to admit, for most readers I've talked to - they either love it or hate it. :) But if your husband is actually telling you to BUY books - then he's definitely a keeper! :)
@buddyt - Thanks for joining us! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed ES. :) Right now, the only other genre I have plans to write in is the horror/thriller genre. My hubby and I are working on a paranormal thriller series, but it'll probably be a while before it releases. He's doing all the story line planning, and I'm writing it. :)
@fr_larsson - It's a pleasure to meet you! I can't thank you enough for buying ES and giving the story chance. :) I really hope you enjoy it!! :)
@BlackwaterMama - Thanks for stopping by! You so made me blush with your comment about loving ES. :) Thank you! I know I'm a dork - but I still get all excited when someone says they like one of my books. I really hope you enjoy EH as much as ES! :)
@Rain Maiden - Welcome, welcome! Glad to hear you liked the excerpt. :) Thanks for adding the books to your wish list. Good luck! :)
Thanks a lot for making this open to international followers!

I'm just starting to get into PNR & looking for good books/authors. This definitely caught my interest. 15 books is a lot tho. Do I need to read them in sequence or is each book able to be read as a stand alone without getting totally lost?
thumbelinda03@yahoo.com
Sorry I wasn't able to stop back in yesterday to answer your questions. We had nasty storms most of the day and I lost my internet!
@Dovile - Thanks for stopping by! You're very welcome. I don't like to leave anyone out! :)
@JenM - It's nice to meet you! Thanks for the congrats and for reading. :) I hope it never takes this long to release a book again. As for Odin, his book, Eternal Embers, is book #5 in the series, and has a tentative release date of October 2012. :)
@latishajean - Thanks for commenting! I'm happy to hear you liked the excerpt. Good luck! :)
@Mary - Welcome, welcome! My favorite author to read overall is a toss up between Sherrilyn Kenyon and Stephen King. :) But my favorite book of all time is A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'Engle. :)
@Andra - Thanks for joining us! I have total input on my covers right now, mainly because I'm self-published. I did run the cover of Eternal Hearts by my agent after I designed it though, and luckily he thought it was fantastic. :) As for naming my characters, I let my husband do it, especially if I need an old name. He's like a walking name encyclopedia!
@Stacy - Thanks for dropping in and for entering. Good luck! :)
@elaing8 - It's nice to meet you! Thanks for adding the books to your TBR list. I really hope you enjoy them! :)
@Linda - Thanks for stopping by! Welcome to the PNR genre, I think you'll really like it! :) Eternal Seduction (book 1) can easily be read as a stand alone. Eternal Hearts (book 2) can be read as a stand alone too, but I think I may have gone a little too light with the world building explanations, so I'd recommend reading the first 2 in order. I've worked really hard in book 3 to make it stand alone, and will do the same with the following books. :)
LOVE this series and I can't wait for Odin's book, he's one of my absolute favorites!

@jeanette8042 - Thanks for stopping in! I can't thank you enough for reading my series. :) I'm really starting the feel the pressure for Odin's book! ;)
@Julie - Welcome, welcome! Glad you enjoyed the excerpt. I hope you enjoy the books! :)
@BLHmistress - LOL! That's okay, I love my stalkers. :) I've said it before and I'll say it again - I love Oktober! He's my ultimate bad boy.:D
@heatwave16 - Thanks for joining us! The books can stand alone, but I'd suggest reading Eternal Seduction before Eternal Hearts. Plus, Eternal Seduction is available on most sites for 99 cents, so if you find you don't like my writing style - you won't be out much! :)
@Mariee - Thanks for commenting, and I'm happy to hear you liked the excerpt! Good luck! :)
@Michelle Bledsoe - It's a pleasure to meet you! You're very welcome for the prize pack. Good luck in the drawing!! :)
@danni - Thanks for stopping by! I'm glad the excerpt worked for you. :) Have a good one!
@Maria - It's nice to meet you! Thanks so much for the compliment about the covers. I can't wait to share the one for book #3! :)
@winnie - Welcome! You're very welcome for the international giveaway. :) I'm equal opportunity! ;)
@Sofija Kapranova - Thanks for stopping in! I hope you enjoy the books. :) Good luck in the giveaway!
@Kassandra - It's a pleasure to meet you! I think the best part of writing the beginning of a relationship is when the characters see each other for the first time. I'm always amazed by what my characters first notice about their hero/heroine! :)
@Pamk - Thanks so much for stopping by and for adding the books to your wishlist! Good luck in the giveaway! :)
I've heard really good things about this series, and I love the covers! Did you have any say in making the covers?
Thanks for the international giveaway!

That except was FANTASTIC! I've now got a million questions about the book since I'm not familiar with the author YET. The first and foremost of which is Who is Christian and why does he get to tell Toni what to do?
GFC Following as either Jenn Donnelly or Jenn of Frequent Reader Infrequent Blogger. I tried to change my blogger user name but I'm not sure it took so I'm no longer sure of what I'm following as. Anyway awesome giveaway. My email is jennlovesed14 at gmail
Great excerpt! Why is Drake needing so much bathroom time? (I know, I know--read the book! But that's something that will make me peek at the end!)

Wow what a hot excerpt!! I must read this series!!
After reading the comments I'm excited to see there will be 15 books in the series. While that sounds like a lot with excerpts like these I am sure to never get bored!!
Thank you so much for the Giveaway!!

@JessS - Thanks for stopping by! I had, and still have, total say over the covers because I'm self-published. :) I did run the cover for EH by my agent though, and luckily he approved! :)
@mbreakfield - Welcome, welcome! I think Drake is pretty hot too. ;) Good luck in the drawing!
@Diana - It's nice to meet you! Thanks so much for taking time to read the excerpt. :) Good luck!
@erin - Thanks for stopping in and for adding me to your wishlist! You're very welcome! :)
@Robin - Thanks for commenting! Toni and Drake are one of my favorite couples. I hope you like them as much as I do! :)
@Mikki Mano - It's a pleasure to meet you! Thanks so much for your compliments of the cover of Eternal Hearts. So far, EH is my definitely favorite cover too. :)
@Jenn of Frequent Reader - Thanks for joining us! Christian is the vampire Lord of Chicago. He gets to decide who can stay in the city and who goes...so that's why he's telling Toni what to do. ;)
@Meredith - Welcome to the party! Drake needs so much bathroom time because, well...he isn't like all the other vampires whose body functions are in stasis. As for why Drake is different...you'll have to read the book. ;)
@Patricia's Particularity - It's nice to meet you! It's awesome to hear someone else is comfortable with 15 books. :) Good luck in the giveaway!
@Lexi - Thanks for stopping in! I'm not sure how I got so creative. I think it might be genetic, and I hope like hell I passed it on to my own daughter! :D Have a good one!
I would like to ask - if her books were made to a movie, which actors would she choose?

I really must say I absolutely adore the book covers, both of them!! Now I wonder how much of a say did you have on them as the author?

Thank you for sharing this excerpt. I haven't read these books, but they sound great and are now on my to-read list. I think I've got a crush on Drake already.

Love the excerpt, make me want to read your book. And I love the cover of Eternal Seduction. Since I never read your books before, are you considered your books are erotica? Or just at steamy level? How to write a sexy love scene? Thanks :)

Just read Paranormal Haven's review of Eternal Seduction. Sounds very promising, and the uniqueness of the lead character adds to that.
It's not the genre I normally gravitate towards, but I've been spending the last year or two warming up to it. I'll have to keep these books in mind.

Sounds great! I would love to read it!
my question: Would you be able to stop writing or you love it so much you can´t stop?

Thank you for the excerpt! I have to admit I haven't heard of Jennifer before your event, but dark paranormal romance sounds interesting, would love to discover her series!
And I have to say the cover of Eternal Hearts is thought-provoking, without knowing the premise I just stared at it trying to figure out what the story is about, it sure looks exciting :-D
Thank you for the great giveaway!
