Today author Jennifer Ashley has stopped by for her first visit to Paranormal Haven. We are so happy to have her here with us to talk about her books, including her latest release Primal Bonds. Primal Bonds is the newest chapter in her Shifters Unbound series. You can check out our reviews for more about Primal Bonds or visit Jennifer's website.Lets get into the interview and make sure you keep reading because we also have a giveaway.
Paranormal Haven: What inspired you to write a Shifter series?
Jennifer Ashley: Construction workers on the side of the road. Really. I was searching for an idea for a paranormal series (I wanted to do a vampire series, but the publisher said "no vamps," so it was back to the drawing board.) While driving to the airport, I saw these guys that kind of looked alike, maybe brothers. I got this idea that they were all related--a family of bachelors, living and working together. I thought "what if they were shifters?" and things started rolling in my head.
None of my Shifters actually work construction—it was more the sense of family and camaraderie between the guys that made me come up with the Morrissey family and the Shifters in general. Liam, Sean, Dylan, and Connor were born, and the book started to write itself!
PH: Can you tell our followers about your newest release, Primal Bonds?JA: Primal Bonds is the second book in the Shifters Unbound series. Shifters "came out" twenty years ago, and humans, fearing them, rounded them up, made them live in "Shiftertowns," and put Collars on them to control them.
In Primal Bonds: When half-Fae, half-Shifter Andrea Gray flees an abusive would-be mate, the only way she is allowed to relocate to the Austin Shiftertown is if a Shifter there claims her as mate.
Sean Morrissey, the Guardian of his clan and all of Shiftertown, is mateless, lonely, and has a tough job--to send the souls of deceased Shifters into the afterworld. He volunteers to claim her, sight unseen, but doesn't realize that one look at the gray-eyed, dark-haired Andrea will stir the mating frenzy in him. Even though the mate-claim isn't finalized, official, or yet blessed, Sean will do anything to get Andrea into his life and keep her there, forever.
That's the blurb, but I want to give you a little bit more about Shifters!
Shifters: Shape shifters of all species, mostly predatory: Most commonly Feline, Lupine, and Bear. The Fae bred Shifters millennia ago from the best of each species to be hunters and fighters for the Fae. Shifters rebelled during the human Middle Ages, fought the Shifter/Fae war, and thereafter lived independently of the Fae.
Collars: Developed by a half-Fae, Collars are both magical and technological. Tied to the adrenal system, they send shocks and pain through the Shifter's body if he starts to get violent.
Mates: Pairings recognized by the pride or clan leader in two rituals, one under full sun, one under the full moon. Shifters are not allowed to be legally married under human law, but the sun and moon rituals are recognized by Shifter law as a marriage.
Pride: Mates and cubs plus closely tied family members living with them (e.g., parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, first cousins). (Lupines=Packs; Bears=clans)
Clan: A collection of prides or packs that are related, though the relationships may be very distant (e.g., cousins to the 12th degree). The clan leader supersedes the pride or pack leader, although no clan leader can interfere with issues between mates or between parents and cubs. Females and cubs are protected from the clan or pride leader by the male mate. (Note: Bears only have clans, but they distinguish between immediate family and extended family.)
Shiftertowns: Enclaves in inner-cities or remote rural areas cordoned off by humans where Shifters must live. Shifters are not allowed to live outside Shiftertowns.
Shiftertown Leader: A new position created for Shifters by humans. The Shiftertown Leader is chosen from the clan leaders in that Shiftertown, and has final authority over the entire Shiftertown--over all species. He can supersede clan- and pride leader decisions when necessary. The Shiftertown leader usually has a second (and often a third), to take care of detailed Shiftertown business.
Sword of the Guardian: A mystical sword made of magically hardened silver and bronze forged by a Shifter and spelled by a Fae. The sword turns a dead Shifter's body to dust and releases the soul (see "Shifter Made" in The Mammoth Book of Irish Romance, Running Press, Feb., 2010).
The Guardian: The member of the clan chosen to use the Sword of the Guardian to dispatch a dead Shifter's soul into the afterlife (the Summerland). Before the Collar, each clan had its own Guardian (and own sword); at present, each Shiftertown has a Guardian that is responsible for everyone in that Shiftertown (across all clans, prides, and species).
PH: Did any of your characters give you a hard time while writing this book?
JA: Yes! Andrea, the heroine, did. I had to revise her several times. I struggled to find who she was and get her right. Sean likes her, though, so I guess it worked out :-)
PH: What is your favorite scene, so far, from this series?
JA: I think it has to be Sean settling the bet over what underwear he was wearing in his front driveway. I love that scene!
PH: Will things ever change between Shifters and the Fae?
JA: I have many things coming up for the Shifters and the Fae. There’s more going on among the Fae than meets the eye, and the Shifters will be interacting more with them. I will develop things in Wild Cat and the books beyond.
PH: Which heroine could you see yourself being friends with Glory, Kim or Andrea?
JA: Probably Glory. She's hilarious, and you always know where you stand. Besides, she likes good ice cream. And she likes Dylan, so I can't fault her taste.
PH: There are several different species of Shifters in your series, do you have a favorite?
JA: Felines and Lupines and Bears, oh my! I love the Felines, the wildcats, just because I like cats, plus werewolves have become overdone lately. I am liking the bears I’m coming up with, though—Ronan the Kodiak bear in Primal Bonds, and Shane, a grizzly you’ll meet in Wild Cat.
PH: If you could go on a date with Liam, Sean, Dylan or Connor, who would you pick and what would your date be like?
JA: Oh, wow, what a choice. It would have to be Dylan. I love Sean and Liam, but Dylan really floats my boat. Strong, tough, silent, but with a lot going on inside. You'd know that if he picked you, he really meant it. The date would probably be short on conversation, but long on the good stuff, LOL.
PH: What do you have in store next for this series?
JA: In the next book, Wild Cat, you’ll meet another Shifter family, the Wardens: Eric, Cassidy, and Jace. They’re Felines who look mostly like snow leopards. Eric has jade greens eyes and bad-ass tattoos. He’s the leader of his Shiftertown, and he has a struggle to keep everyone in line.
His sister, his second, Cassidy, recently lost her mate, and she’s dealing with grief at the same time she’s trying to find her mate’s killer. During her hunt, she runs afoul of Diego Escobar, a human who is trying to keep her (and the Shifters) out of trouble. Diego is a little bit like the hero of Burn Notice—he has a lot of baggage but willing to do what he needs to do to help Cassidy. He’s a hand-to-hand combat expert, and seriously hot :-)
PH: What else can we expect to see from you this year?
JA: A lot. Pride Mates, the first book of the Shifters series, will be reissued by Berkley in both print and e-book in July. Following that, in August, the Mackenzie series will resume—Berkley is re-issuing The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (in print and ebook) at the same time the third book in the series The Many Sins of Lord Cameron (also in August). And then more Shifters with Wild Cat in January, followed by more Mackenzies.
On the Allyson James front, the next book in the Stormwalker series, Shadow Walker will appear in June 2011. I’ll also have a short Stormwalker story called “Double Hexed” in the Hexed anthology with Ilona Andrews.
Also, as Allyson James, I’m resuming my Tales of the Shareem series at Ellora’s Cave. Braden (which has the hottest cover alive) will be out sometime soon. It’s finished and with the publisher—I’m waiting to hear a pub date. I’m working on the next book, Justin, now.
And finally: I’m reviving my Ashley Gardner persona (Regency mysteries), and publishing the first six books in that series in Nook and Kindle, to be followed by new books in the series. The first one The Hanover Square Affair is up already, and will be followed by A Regimental Murder in March (plan to pub one a month).
I’m also working to get a few backlist Jennifer Ashley novellas up for sale on Nook and Kindle as I can.
In other words: Lots of stuff!
Thanks so much!

My question would have to be, who's your favorite bad guy ever? Do you have one that just sticks in your mind?

Your a new author for me and I would love to read this book. Loved the interview and can't wait to read this one.
miztik_rose@yahoo.com
Thanks for having me here, and thanks for stopping by everyone! Jessica: You asked who was my favorite bad guy. That's hard to answer, because I'm not that interested in villains. They are either too cardboard, or they're such great characters they stop being villains, if that makes sense. If I had to pick one, it would have to be Severus Snape from Harry Potter--but he's not really a villain, he's a tortured soul. (Plus Alan Rickman is hot...)
I love your books both paranormal and historical. Please don't enter me I have this book coming any day now in hardback, woohoo.
I just wanted to stop in and read the interview. Great job ladies.
Wish you the best Jennifer!
Laurie
Your book sounds amazing and I have added it to my wish list! Thanks for sharing with us today! Great Post!

I have been reading paranormal for a while and have always wondered why some kind of collar wouldn't be used in a story for shifters. Of course, I was thinking this while re-readihg Justine Davis fantasy romance title Lord of the Storm.
You give an interesting explanation of the collars in the post. That must have been a nasty half fae to develop it.
I haven't read any of the books, but I'm convinced they are really good, because of the review. Thanks for the chance to get to know them. I love both paranormal and historical books.

How am I JUST NOW hearing about all of these books? I've bookmarked your website but don't know where to begin! Immortals? Walkers? Historical paranormal? Too many choices!

I am really looking forward to this new book. My question for Jennifer: Will there be more books in the Svengaria world? I really like the world you invented.
How do you pick your character names?

I am VERY excited to hear about all the re-releases as I lost many of her books in a move.
That being said--we really should ask her when she sleeps :)
I love that she broke down the Prides, that helps to understand that culture better. Very awesome :)

Great interview! I love your shifter series, especially sense it feels so fresh and new. Question, do you plan to write books focused on the other Morrissey men?
Also, can't wait for the reissue of the Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie! I discovered after it went out of print, so I am so happy they are re-releasing it!
I've noticed some common themes with the Shifters and the Shareem - namely that of a socially more powerful female using a socially constrained male to explore her needs for protection and, in some cases, domination.
(And I'm using 'using' rather roughly here. Although it's obvious that some women do exploit the males this way, the main characters aren't exploitative.)
Is that an explicit theme for you - something you intended to explore - or something implicit that burble up out of the relationships you wanted to write about?
My apologies. I appear to have been signed in with the wrong Google account. Goodness knows which one that was ...
Woohoo! What a cover!
Definitely sounds like something I'm interested in!

How do you decide which genre is your next project? Do you have a favorite?

I just finished Primal Bonds and I love it. I can't wait for the next book.

I am a huge fan of both your Stormwalker and Shifter's Unbound series. Can't wait to see what happens next in both worlds. So here's my question. I know it's hard to speculate when you aren't sure how many books you will actually be able to do in a series BUT is there any chance we will see Spike get his happy ending? I'd certainly love to give him one. HEE HEE. He fascinates me. Maybe it's the fact that I've been obsessed with Buffy for years, or the fact that he's heavily-tattooed (which rocks my world) or that he's a yummy shifter. I'm thinking all of the above. All those things combined are my fantasy come to life (well fictional but you know what I mean). Spike rocks!! Good luck, Jennifer!! I hope the book does well.
I'm always looking for new series to read, sounds good! tWarner419@aol.com
I LOVE ALL Shifter types and your Books sound Great many different types to read about.Werewolves are getting carried away but still love them two.

Kimmi, Nola said: How am I JUST NOW hearing about all of these books? I've bookmarked your website but don't know where to begin! Immortals? Walkers? Historical paranormal? Too many choices!
LOL. It's easiest to get hold of the Walker series (w/a Allyson James) and the Shifters series. Highlander Ever After, one of the paranormal historicals just got re-released in trade, so it's out there too! Good luck!
Thanks for all the wonderful comments and compliments! I really appreciated it!
I with blogger would let me answer each comment at each comment, but I'll do the best I can!
Aurian asks: Will there be more books in the Nvengaria world?
I'm not sure, because that publisher (Dorchester) isn't publishing me anymore. I would like to, but it will probably be me putting the books on Kindle and Nook myself. I have the rights back to my Christmas Ball story, which I plan to re-edit and republish (I don't really like how it turned out and I want to expand it to better fit the series.) Sometime!
Vivien asked: How do you pick your character names?
I have lists. And lists and lists. Whenever I see or hear a name i like, it goes on the lists. I also have lists of names by origin; e.g., Scottish names, Irish names; or names most common in certain periods in history. (No Tiffanies in medieval Scotland.)
When I need a character name, I go through the lists until I find one that goes with the character. I try very hard not to use the same names twice, though I might accidentally reuse the name of a very minor character elsewhere (first name or last name, never both).
Thanks for the giveaway! Looks like something i'd like :)
queen_tui@hotmail.com
That being said--we really should ask her when she sleeps :)
LOL! Actually I sleep a lot. I love to sleep. I'll probably be taking a nap after this.
Heather S said: Question, do you plan to write books focused on the other Morrissey men?
I hope to, yes. I have Eric and his family / friends coming up, but would also like to do a story on Connor when he comes of age. Plus some more set in that Shiftertown (Ronan, Ellison, etc)
Sandra said: "I've noticed some common themes with the Shifters and the Shareem - namely that of a socially more powerful female using a socially constrained male to explore her needs for protection and, in some cases, domination. Is that an explicit theme for you - something you intended to explore - or something implicit that burble up out of the relationships you wanted to write about?"
I don't usually set out writing with a specific theme in mind. The first thing that comes to me are a hero and heroine in a certain situation (their first meet, or first passionate encounter, or first fight). And I let the characters take over from there.
But sure, it's interesting to take a woman who doesn't "need" a man (she's socially and financially independent) and let her discover that she has emotional needs as well.
A woman learning about her sexuality is interesting to me. When I was growing up, I was taught that women didn't have a sexual side or sexual needs--women who did were "bad". (That wasn't all that long ago, which is kinda sad.) I knew in my heart that this idea wasn't true, and so I like to portray women finding out that they really do have needs.
Although, in the next Shifter book, Wild Cat, I have a different dynamic: the heroine is a Shifter, the hero a human.
Does that answer the question? I truly am most interested in the story and the characters. Themes just come out.
Penfield said: How do you decide which genre is your next project? Do you have a favorite?
The order in which I write books is kind of decided for me by the publisher. They shedule them and give me turn-in dates. So this year, my Jennifer Ashley books go: paranormal, historical, paranormal, historical, paranormal...
I decide, though, what series I want to write and send in my proposal to the publisher in hopes they'll buy it. I love both paranormal and historical, and it's hard to decide which is my favorite. Writing both keeps me fresh, because I use a different mindset.
Some people have told me it's like two or three different writers write my books, which I take as a compliment. But it's all me, my ten fingers (which kind of hurt now).
Melanie said: "I know it's hard to speculate when you aren't sure how many books you will actually be able to do in a series BUT is there any chance we will see Spike get his happy ending? So, are you saying that you want me to write a book about Spike??
It's a huge possibility. :-) Can't tell you exactly when, but he's an interesting guy.

debbie aske: Would you ever consider a unusual animal like an elephant as a shifter character?
An elephants. Now there's a visual, LOL. I guess he'd be...big.
For now I'm sticking to cats, wolves and bears, though I also do dragons (as Allyson James). Something flying would be cool, like eagles, hawks, or falcons (no penguins).
Natasha said: "I love the cover.. whos the designer??"
The art design is by Tony Mauro. He does my Stormwalker books as well.
I have read books by your other pen names and love them But not read anything with this pen name. Not sure why but looks like I need to rememdy that lol.
I love feline shifters too...lions, leopards, tigers, all of them lol! Would love to read your book =)

I am a follower and email subscriber. I would love to read your books. They sounds really good. Tore923@aol.com
Have you considered non-mammal shifters? Aside from dragons, I don't recall reading about any shifters that are not mammals. Why is that? I would so love to read an insect shifter or something.

JA/AJ/AG said: "Does that answer the question? I truly am most interested in the story and the characters. Themes just come out."
Thank you - that does answer my question. That tends to be how I relate to the stories when I read them. The characters stick as people, and only later when I am mulling things over (in the shower, for example) do I start thinking about underlying themes.
I love Jennifers work! My fav is the shifter's series!

I really enjoyed your worldbuilding in Pride Mates. It was a bit of a different take from the usual shifter story. I've got to get caught up - now I have both Primal Bonds, and Firewalker to read.

Thanks for the interview! This Shifter series really piqued my interest because I haven't read all that many books myself where shifters, weres or the like "came out" in society. I also now want to get to that 'Sean settling the bet over what underwear he was wearing in his front driveway' scene! So thanks for the opportunity to win!

Thanks for the interview, it's really interesting.

First of all thank you Stephanie and Athenna for drawing my attention to Jennifer Ashley a completely new to me author, but whose novels sound exciting, will have to add them to my wishlist! :-)
Jennifer, I have to confess I am very happy your series is about shifters, I'm tired of vamps and my favourite supernatural species are shifters! I love excatly the traits you mentioned: the bond, the loyalty, the camaraderie between them, and the warmth and affection too!
I saw you also write regency mysteries, wow that also sound interesting, how did the idea came to write this combination, what drew you to this genre mix?
Thank you for the generous giveaway!
