You're Only Old Once
Halloween Memories
By Melissa de la Cruz

Happy Halloween from the Blue Bloods!

When I was in my twenties and living in New York City, my friend Roger had a loft in SoHo. This was WAY before lofts in SoHo were ridiculously expensive and SoHo was just another place to live and not a tourist and Euro haven. It was a real artist's loft, dirty, paint-splattered, you had to walk up steep, rickety stairs to get to it. There was a futon on the floor, half-finished paintings everywhere, and you did NOT want to go to the bathroom.

But because Rodge had this cool loft, every year he hosted a big Halloween party. Big meaning all his ex-college friends who were in the city along with their new friends, which wasn't that many people at all. I remember those parties very fondly. The first year, I was twenty-two and I went as Jackie Kennedy after the assassination. I wore a vintage pink suit, a pillbox hat, white gloves, pearls, and had my hair done in that Jackie bob. Then my friend Morgan splattered me with red paint and white paint. Yeah, I know, I have a sick sense of humor. It's why I write vampire books.

The next year I went as Babe Paley (no blood), the year after, Madonna during her Shantih-Shantih phase, which meant I wore a long black wig and a sari, and then the year I went with my boyfriend who became my husband, I went as Coco Chanel, in a black and white suit and ropes of pearls. (My friend Morgan was Karl Lagerfeld with a fan. The year I went as P-A Jackie, or Post-Assasination Jackie, he was Andy Warhol.)

The Halloween Parties blur a little in memory, but I'll always remember the one where Rodge shaved off the top of his head to simulate balding. He also grew a mustache. That year, neighbors called the police to tell us to tone down the music. When Rodge opened the door in his costume, with his chrome dome and 'stashe and the loungey robe, the police treated him as if he were a proper middle-aged grown-up and he pretended to be his uncle, who owned the loft, and apologized for all the noise "his nephew and his friends" were making. When the police left, we all burst out laughing.

It's still my favorite memory of Halloween. That's almost twenty years ago now, and the thought that one of us would EVER be mistaken for a proper grown-up seems as hilarious to me now as it was back then. I never want to be too old for Halloween. I knew my husband was the guy for me when during the first Halloween we spent together, he donned a sick-sense-of humor-costume that horrified and appalled all my friends. I, of course, thought it was hysterically funny and, yes, sick, but that was a good thing in my mind.

This year our daughter has informed us we will be going as Princess/Darth Vader family. The girl and I will be princesses and Daddy will be Darth Vader. But when she's old enough, we'll indoctrinate her in the sick/funny costumes that make Mom and Dad love this holiday.

Happy Halloween everyone!
xoxo
Mel

Some of my favorite Halloween memories consist of the times when kids were aloud to go out without a parent. I remember my siblings and me running around the neighborhood racing to see who could finish a street first and not having to worry about our parents keeping up. We would go threw out the neighborhood and then go home and sort our candy in bags with the candy count so we knew if someone stole a piece lol.

Not Entering! I just bought the first one on Audible so looking forward to listening to it :)

I have always loved Halloween and growing up in a small town we got homemade treats for trick and treats. It was fantastic fun to run around with your friends, even at a young age, and see what you could score. Now, I pass out candy, dress up, and try to keep the spirit of the day because it truly is about being a kiddo again :)

My most favorite memory is the first time I took my daughter out for Halloween! It's a whole new experience when as a grown adult, we get to view the world through the eyes of a child!

My favorite memories of Halloween involved our children. Trying to find the "best" costume for them and going trick or treating with them when they were little. Now I love to give out the candy to the little ones, their eyes get so big and innocent when they get their candy.

Great stories. My parents stopped letting us dress up when I was about 5 or 6 but I remember always going up to the Red Lobster bar where my mom worked.

Now that I have two girls of my own we have a lot of fun coming up with their costumes each year and trick or treating is a family event around the neighborhood. We finish off the evening with a drive over to their grandparents house (my husbands parents non mine).

Thanks...I am looking forward to the new book!

I can't wait for Misguided Angel, thanks for hosting and thanks to Jennifer and Melissa for the chance to win! :D

Ok, hmmm my favourite Halloween memory. There are so many, but one of my favourite Halloween memories was when my mom, my aunt, some of my cousins and I all went trick or treating. We took or dog with us, and he was in costume. My mom was carrying one of my younger cousins and holding onto my dog's leash when a cat ran across the road in front of and in some bushes, so my dog immediately started trying to chase it, and made my mom and my cousin fall into the bushes. Everyone was ok and it was so hilarious, I can't remember if the cat was black or not though.

Thanks again :)

NAME FOR ENTRY: VIVIAN

I can't wait to read Misguided Angel!

My favorite Halloween memory was in the third grade, when our class had an all-out Halloween party, with costume contests, classroom trick-or-treating, and tons of commercialized candy. I won best costume for my princess costume--tulle skirt, chiffon-y fabric, and sparkly rhinestone crown. I'd have to say, I was pretty proud. :)

I think my favourite Hallowe'en memory was just made this past Sunday night!

My bestie, my man and I went to the Hammertown Pagan Pub Moot. We all kind of "last minute costumed".

I dressed up as Penelope Garcia from Criminal minds (I actually look like her, and kind of dress like her--so I just put all my colourful clothing together and bought an earpiece to wear).

My bestie was a creepy ragdoll. I quickly did some creepy black doll makeup on her.

My man was the rider of the Red Horse--War (from the Bible). He wore a black suit, a skull mask, and carried War and Peace.

So we sat in our little corner table enjoying ourselves, my bestie and I made the rounds to say "hi" several times, and tons of people (who watch TV...a lot of Pagans don't) were shocked at how much I looked the Garcia part.

Then we were told NOT to leave by one of the organizers of the Moot. I was like "Okay".

Then, to our surprise, we got called to the stage because we'd won a costume contest! I was shocked--because really, my costume cost me $1.50. My bestie's costume didn't cost her anything (she's kind of gothy and a seamstress, so she already had the dress and striped tights).

So we went up. I totally expected the kick-ass Baron Samedi and Mama Brijit to win first place(they were AWESOME), but *I* did.

It was judged by the Pub's staff, who I guess all watch Criminal Minds...LOL! The awesome Baron Samedi and Mama Brijit got second, and my bestie got third.

We all won bottles of Mead (honey wine), and I won $150 basket from the most awesome candle/crystal/gift shop in Southern Ontario (I hope to pick it up tomorrow).

So yes, that will probably be my favourite memory. Especially when my arch nemesis was so UPSET that a) she didn't win and b) I won by looking like a ramped up version of me. *evil grin*

My memory is of me and my daughter trick or treating last year. She was 2 and doing so well. Loving every moment of it and a guy in a werewolf costume was behind a car looking to scare the teenage kids and I was carrying my daughter so he thought it was an older kid and jumped out and she freaked out so bad. He felt horrible and gave her a whole bowl of candy. To this day she doesn't like the werewolf costumes people wear.

Last year I had a blast with my friends we didnt go trick or treating but we went to a haunted house and hung out together.

Hmmm. One would be when my brother wayne dressed up as a girl, a really sluttly girl with hairy legs. It was fun stuffing his bra and forcing him into a tube top and high heels.... like trying to dress Cinderella's step sister. LOL. Too bad we didn't have a camera that night. Would have been perfect blackmail for when he got married.

Since my birthday is the day after Halloween, I get a lot of gifts that are Halloween related. I have some really great Halloween figures that my sister painted for me - a witch sitting on a pumpkin, and a black cat with a pumpkin. Whenever I pull them out for the holiday, I think of my sister (who lives across the country from me now).

Fave Halloween memories; when I was a kid and in Girl Scouts we use to have Halloween parties every year at the skating rink and we'd dress up, skate, dance, play games and get treats. So much fun!

Some of my favorite memories from Halloween are how long some of my stashes of Candy lasted. I think my record was a half huge pillow sack until summer, which then it melted across the floor of my closet. ;)

When as kids we would go in a group to all the houses in the neighborhood. Then when we got back to the "base" house we would sit around and trade candy and someone would read Little Orphan Annie.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. We've had a lot of fun with it.

One of my favorites was about 3 yrs ago when my husband, my mom and I all went to a party at the local golf course. Mom was a bag lady while the hubby and I went in our Renaissance Faire garb. It rained like crazy and the pavillion leaked, but we had a lot of fun.

Thanks!

I try to make happy Halloween memories every year. I am happiest when I have time to decorate and put all my haunted houses up & turning my front yard into a cemetery. Making mouth watering, toasted, pumpkin seeds.

My favorite memory though is when I was a kid. My mom & dad took us to haunted houses to get the crap scared out of us but it was such a great time. I can still remember all the smells in the air while waiting in line. We'd get a cup of hot apple cider while waiting to be next to go into the scary haunted house.

One of my favorites would have to be going trick or treating as a family the year before my parents got divorced. I was a witch and had this horrible green paint all over my face lol and my dad was a werewolf. They walked me around to, what seemed like at the time, a hundred different houses. I just remember being so happy and full of wonder! Every year after that didn't feel the same b/c they were divorced/didn't talk to each other so boo on that but I'm thankful that I was old enough to remember them being happy together instead of miserable lol ty for the entry!

I love halloween because it's the only time of year where you can dress up like a freak, go to a stranger's house and get free candy, and watch a bunch of spooky movies. It's fun to decorate also. Halloween is just plain fun!!

A few years ago, my friend's dad dressed up as a policeman and stood on the front lawn of his house, watching the trick-or-treaters. Everyone thought he was a real cop, and nobody thought about silly-stringing his house, at all. When he walked up to me and my friends, we all started sweating a little, like we'd done something wrong. We seriously thought we were in trouble! But then he smiled, and my friend started laughing. He just wanted to say Hi!

My friends and I dressing up and covering every square inch of our bodies then walking into our friends parents house and sitting on the couch. We didn't say a word, one set of our parents got a video camera out because she said that no one would believe that she had a house full of trick or treaters.

They never found out who it was.

It would probably be my first son's 3rd Halloween. His first Halloween he was 5 months old and his second Halloween he was a year and a half. His third Halloween he was 2 and a half and was starting to enjoy the spooky decorations and was excited to put on his costume and get out their with his bucket. We dressed him as a skeleton and painted his face and the picture we got of showing him his reflection in the mirror was priceless. It was a combination of shock and horror LOL I had a blast watching him go door to door saying trick or treat, and smell my feet (thanks to my brother for teaching him that one) He was my first born and through him I grew up and he taught me how to be an adult and a mother. I experienced all my firsts through him and it was so much fun to finally be able to take in this fun holiday with him running around laughing and smiling :)
