Guest post and Giveaway with author J.K. Beck

So who here is a total paranormal junkie? (Picture me raising my hand and waving wildly). Yes, I am. I totally am. And I always have been.

It's not that I won't read books without some paranormal element (I read Deep End of the Ocean and The Help) but I will always gravitate toward the paranormal. Light, dark, that doesn't matter to me so much (though I will choose based on my mood), but I want that added value of paranormal. To me, that's what it is: added value. Something that takes the escapism that is reading one step further, sucking me into a world that is truly otherworldly.

I know I'm not the only one; as I write this post, I'm at an SFF con, and I'm betting pretty much everyone in this hotel could write these same opening paragraphs. But at one of the panels, I started thinking about the origin of my love of paranormal stories. I was weaned on books like Half Magic and The Phantom Tollbooth and A Wrinkle In Time. And on television, my favs were shows like I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, Lost in Space, Star Trek, and on and on. (I had such a crush on Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica...I wonder if that's why I'm so addicted to Starbuck's coffee?).

I haven't outgrown it, and I don't want to. I love the escapism that living in another world brings. Except, that my favorite books don't thrust me entirely into a new world, but instead paint a new layer on this one.

Not surprisingly, those are the kinds of books I like to write, too. Books that layer another world, often dark and dangerous, on top of our world. Writing as Julie Kenner, I drew on my life as a mom to write about a soccer mom who fights demons. And now, writing as JK Beck, I've had fun playing with my former life as an attorney in Los Angeles, taking our judicial system, and hiding within its depths a similar system--but one that investigates, prosecutes and adjudicates crimes committed by paranormal creatures--those living in the shadow world. Book one, When Blood Calls, comes out on Tuesday (I can't believe release day is right around the corner!), followed by When Pleasure Rules and When Wicked Craves in October and November.

In this series, the world is dark, the inhabitants tortured by personal demons (not just the daemons in the stories!). And as much as I might want to say that I met a few demons back when I was practicing law, the truth is that that part of the stories is pure fiction.

Really.

The vampires and werewolves, though.... well, maybe I ran across a few of those.

How about you? Were you weaned on paranormal, or did you discover the added value later? What was the first paranormal book you remember reading? One lucky commenter will win a review copy of When Pleasure Rules!

Seven innocents have been brutally murdered on the streets of Los Angeles, yet the Shadow Alliance has no suspects and no leads. And as more bodies are discovered, the age-old feud between the vampires and werewolves threatens to explode and turn the city into a living nightmare.

With her back to the wall, Lissa Monroe—a strong-willed, ravishingly beautiful succubus who entices men to surrender their souls—agrees to go undercover for the Alliance. Her mission: infiltrate the mind of werewolf leader Vincent Rand, a ferociously alluring enemy who has a powerful hold over her. Lissa has never lost control of her deepest desires, but Rand is an impenetrable paradox, a principled soldier who fears nothing—except perhaps the darkness of his own past. As the city of Angels teeters on the brink of apocalypse, these two adversaries must join together to have even the slimmest chance of surviving a more lethal enemy hidden in plain sight.

The one I really remember for paranormal was Twilight, and after that I devoured the paranormal, but more adult.

The first paranormal romance I read was Wizard in Seattle. I read some Stephen King and stuff like that but I don't know if you would consider that paranormal or just not normal lol.

I read Amaryllis by Jayne Castle and that changed my reading habits. Since that moment - paranormal/sci-fi and UF have been my preferred choice of reading.

Some of the first I read Wizard in Seattle and Dark Prince.

I used to read so often that the librarians would set books aside for my weekly visits! I don't know which book was my first, but I do remember the first MaryJanice Davidson book I read. Since that day, I've been hooked on romance with a taste of the other world!

The first series was Charlaine Harris then I moved on to Jeanniene Frost, Vicki Petterson, and Kim Harrison since then my collection grew and keeps growing.

I have been reading paranormal for awhile. It is my favorite genre. My first books were the Harry Potter series.

I was reading paranormal and didn't even know it. They were just interesting books that reminded me of some of the science-fiction shows that were on television. I don't remember the first one I read.
It wasn't until last year that the it occurred to me what particular genre I was reading.

My first True Paanormal would have to be about th tenth book in the Anita Blake series by Laurel K Hamilton. That book sent me back to Guilty Pleasures and I've been a big fan of the genre ever since.

I have always loved paranormal books. I don't remember my first one, there have been too many :)

That's hilarious -- I totally had a crush on Starbuck too (but I'm more of a Tim Horton's girl for the coffee) I used to love watching Battlestar when I was young -- couldn't bring myself to watch the new version because I loved the old cheesy version so much. The book that got me into the paranormal was Dracula - I read it when I was 10 and have been hooked on this genre ever since. Been hooked on Scify since I was 7 and saw Star Wars (hmm and had a crush on Han Solo)

rofl when I was young they didn't have a lot of paranormal it was horror and the monsters were all bad guys that was until I read one of Maggie Shayne Twilight series. That is the original twilight and it rocked vamps and true love omg I was so hooked. i have been reading them every since. Over thirty years now. And man the first years they were hard to find. I am loving all the overabundance now.

I discovered paranormal when I read JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series! I was hooked!

I read almost nothing but pnr/uf now, and I think the first of my adulthood was the first Merry Gentry novel, but I remember reading tons of Christopher Pike when I was a kid. I don't remember specific titles anymore, but I'm sure I devoured every single one of them, and I think many, if not all of them deal with the paranormal. (Love the Blood Lily Chronicles, by the way!)

Lizzielvr said...

I always read Paranormal/Horror. A few years ago I stumbled across Kresley Cole's A Hunger Like No Other and was hooked on PNR. I never realized that you could have the best of both worlds in one (I admit, I was a romance book snob!) Now I can't get enough of them!

Thanks J.K. for the new series!

Hmm... the first paranormal book I probably read was Dracula, if that counts. Then the second was reading Interview with the vampire, and several other titles from Anne Rice.
This series looks great!

Its funny that you mentioned A Wrinkle in Time. That is one of the first book I ever read as a child. It started my love for reading in general!

I was brought up on two types of books. My mum loved to read us Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables. My grandmum read us fantasy: Narnia, E. Nesbit, etc. I think I always preferred the fantasy over the "real life" books.

Athenna -- yay!

As for Starbuck...oh, yeah...And Star Wars was Luke, until I got a year or two older and realized it was all about Han! Never heard of Tim Horton's. A Canada place?

Thanks for the Blood Lily thumbs up! And thanks to you all for continuing this great list!

Didn't start reading paranormal romances until I was adult. A friend got me started on Christine Feehan's Carpathians, and I've been hooked ever since.

I didn't really start reading paranormal till Twight - yep, Twight! I loved it and fought the idea of reading it because it was A. about teens and B. I was 37, I didn't want to read about a bunch of teenagers! However, it opened my reading world up to a whole new level!!! Love paranormal and read mostly it. Love Larissa Ione, JR Ward, Kresley Cole, Laurell K. Hamilton, Alexis Morgan, Angela Knight (I could go on forever!!). Very excited to add JK Beck to my list :)

I discovered my love of paranormal books much later in life...around 32. I was severely sheltered growing up and not allowed to listen to or watch radio/TV other than the Christian variety. So books of this sort were forbidden as well!
I did eventually rebel and get a boyfriend/husband who thoroughly corrupted me...but I didn't find my love of all things paranormal until my daughter was reading Twilight and I decided I should probably know what she was reading. Low and behold after that I was hooked only I wanted something more "grown up" and found the BDB and Dark Hunters and a year and a half later I have a Kindle with nearly 350 books on it. Needless to say I am hooked…and your series is on my to be read calendar of books I am looking forward to reading!
Thanks!

The first paranormal I remember reading was Robert Howard's Conan the Barbarian. Then there was Tolkien and Hobbits. This was when they were first published in the 70's - not with the movie. :) And I never thought about it until I read your comment, but I do prefer the 'normal' world overlaid, or would that be underlaid, with the paranormal.

The first paranormal book I can remember reading is A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle when I was young. I've loved stories about witches, ghosts, etc., ever since. Anything with that "added value," is a hit with me.

I was weaned on paranormal! Does Greek Mythology count? What about Dracula by Bram Stoker? Okay then, we'll start with The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice.

I do read other types of romance, but paranormal is always my go to.

I'm not sure what my first paranormal read actually was, but I know that Christine Feehan's Carpathian series hooked me completely. Since Dark Prince, I've collected everybook she's ever released. And I've added several authors to my collection of paranormal romances: Alexis Morgan, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Alyssa Day, Gena Showalter, Shayla Black, Lora Leigh, Lydia Dare, Lynn Viehl, Angela Knight, Christine Warren, and so many more!!!
When I'm in the mood for a good vampire, a stunning shapeshifter, or a hot magician, I love going to the bookstore to find something new.

I think my first paranormal was either Pet Sematary or Interview with a Vampire. My first paranormal romance was A Hunger Like No Other, and that was the book that REALLY got me hooked on the genre.

Given the very wide range you include as paranormal then i giuss you could say I have been a fan of the genre for more years than I care to remember.

Although I have always seen myself as a SciFi/high Fantasy reader rather than a paranormal one.

I had always read romances mostly Harlequin. They had a series that was Intrigue that touched on light paranormal happenings, nothing like their Nocturne series that I also read. I had a friend give me one of the early C.Feehan "Carpathian" books and OMG I was hooked. Though I still read romances, YA, and historicals, my bookcases are 90% Paranormal Romances.

I think I've always been a PNR junkee since I was little. From my obsession with Beauty & The Beast --- to my later gaganess over The Little Mermaid Disney movie when I was a child.

My first literal PNR that I read were I think Christopher Pike books way back when. Was it like the First Vampire or something.

While reading your interview, you mentioned the Magic Tollbooth. I remember reading that book years and years ago and absolutely loving it, but didn't even realize it was considered paranormal. So I guess that would be my first book of paranormal I also read the Mirror, mentioned above. Does Bite Me by Christopher Moore count? I just finished that one!

I only remember the first 3 books through which I discovered the UF/paranormal romance genre a few years ago: they were the 1st Black Daggerhood book by JR Ward, the first Riley Jenson book by Keri Arthur and Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. Fell in love with the urban fantasy magical setting immediately! (It wasn't completely unknown to me as I've always loved paranormal TV series and films).

Thank you for the great giveaway and CONGRATULATIONS on your releases!! :-)
